Exceptional transport

What exceptional transport is really about

A 50-tonne transformer is hanging from the crane. Three parties are standing by: the crane operator, the driver of the semi-lowbed, the terminal that has released the loading window. Everything has to align within the hour. That is exceptional transport: not the driving itself, but the moment of loading and discharging, where cranes, time margins and people have to work in perfect coordination. PLS organises exceptional transport across Europe by road and worldwide by sea, with OOG Cargo as our core activity: cargo that cannot fit inside a standard container due to its weight, dimensions or shape.

We plan, arrange permits through our network and ensure cargo is on the right equipment before departure. No surprises on the day itself, because the work has already been done.

Exceptional transport via the Port of Antwerp

The Port of Antwerp is PLS's base. Short lines to terminals, crane operators and hauliers who know how to load a lowbed or mafi trailer. That proximity makes a difference when a loading window shifts or a permit comes in at the last moment: we can respond quickly because the parties are already known to us.

OOG Cargo for heavy and out-of-gauge shipments

OOG Cargo, Out of Gauge Cargo, refers to cargo that exceeds the standard dimensions of a container. Too wide, too tall, too heavy, or a shape that cannot be stacked. Think wind turbine components, large vehicles or boats. For this type of cargo we work with flatracks, breakbulk shipment or a semi-lowbed, depending on what the cargo and the route require.

Transport of coils, transformers, silos and machinery

Transformers from 35 to 65 tonnes, pressure vessels up to 45 tonnes, coils, silos, industrial machinery: these are the shipments we plan every day. Each type has different requirements for securing, weight distribution and trailer type. A coil requires a different approach than a silo: the centre of gravity sits differently, and that determines which equipment and securing method are needed. By planning these shipments daily, we know exactly which questions to ask upfront to avoid surprises during loading.

How PLS prepares an exceptional transport

We start with an analysis of the dimensions, weight and technical data of the cargo. Based on that, we find the right haulier with the appropriate semi-lowbed. Permits are applied for through our partners, tailored to the route and the municipalities or regions the cargo passes through. Only once that is in place do we schedule the transport to the terminal and the loading onto a flatrack, mafi or breakbulk. Where necessary, the cargo is shrink-wrapped for protection. Customs formalities are handled by that point, so departure from the Port of Antwerp can proceed without delay.

When something changes, a vessel is cancelled, a permit is delayed, a loading location turns out to be inaccessible, we adapt. We draw on our network to find an alternative and communicate openly with both client and subcontractor.

Why experience matters more than the heaviest trailer

Exceptional transport is not about who has the biggest equipment. It is about anticipating: knowing what can go wrong before it does. At PLS there is no single person who holds all the knowledge about a file. The entire team is informed and shares experience, so there is always someone available who knows the details.

A successful project means the cargo arrives undamaged and the client is satisfied with the effort put in. What makes the difference is how the execution goes: whether the loading window is met, whether the cargo is properly secured, whether everyone is in the right place at the right time. We do not aim to be the heaviest transporter, but the most experienced in the shipments that come through every day.

Our approach

  • Technical analysis upfront: dimensions, weight and cargo specifics are mapped out before any equipment is sourced.
  • Permits through a fixed network of partners: tailored to the specific route, keeping administrative delays to a minimum.
  • The right equipment for each shipment: semi-lowbed, flatrack or breakbulk, chosen based on what the cargo requires, not on what happens to be available.
  • One team, no single point of contact: everyone at PLS knows the file and is reachable.
  • Nearly 40 years of experience in exceptional transport: hundreds of files have taught us how cargo behaves at the moment it actually moves, during loading, transit and discharge.
